PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By: Briseida DeLeon Northrup, AuD, CCC-A, F-AAA President, Pan-American Society of Audiology (PASA)

WITHOUT BARRIERS

As I begin this new chapter in the existence of our society, I would like to thank our past Presidents, Dr. Sanford E. Gerber and Dr. Pedro Berruecos V for their leadership and their commitment toward the goals of this society. I also deeply thank each of the past PASA Board Members who have contributed to the advancement of this society with their time and energy. My gratitude is also given to you, members of PASA, who have remained faithful in supporting the endeavors of this organization. All of you have been, as a popular song by Bette Midler says “the wind beneath our wings”.

This past November, the V Pan-American Congress of Audiology was held in beautiful Bogota, Colombia. We heard distinguished national and international colleagues speak on the auditory and vestibular system, clinical audiology, and technological advances in aural re/habilitation. We absolutely gained state-of the-art information that we can use in our work settings, whether they be hospitals, clinics, schools, industry, universities or private practices. However, in addition to all of the above, I was privileged to see the collaboration of professionals in audiology and otology and how their union helped to make the Congress a huge success. There were no barriers, no separations and no inequalities, only a strong desire to help each other so we could all better serve the people with auditory and vestibular problems. This spirit of unity without barriers is what allows people to move mountains and build important platforms for the future. I am very honored and thrilled to have the following distinguished group of professional as members of the PASA Board: Soami Santiago de Snyder, Vice-President of the North and Clemencia Baron, Vice-Presidents of the South; Patricia Castellanos de Munoz, Treasurer; Marcela Escobar, Secretary; and Gladys Fernandez de Soto, Angelina N. de S. Martinez, Adriana Rivas, and Fausto Coellos, Members at Large. They are respected individuals with excellent credentials and dedication to our profession who will work very hard to accomplish the goals and objectives of this society.

As the President of PASA, I want to continue to foment this spirit of unity without barriers in our future congresses, e-newsletters and with other healthcare and communication professionals. As we let others know how audiologists positively impact the lives of our patients through what we do, we will continue to gain their recognition, respect and cooperation.
